Pousada Monstros do Rio
Aracá River · Demeni River
Pousada Monstros do Rio is the only fixed lodge on Rio Demeni, a white-water tributary of the Rio Negro located roughly 130 km from Barcelos (AM) by river. That geographic exclusivity translates to near-private access across more than 30 surrounding lakes — fished almost entirely by the lodge team, except on rare occasions when houseboats manage to reach the area. During the dry season, when falling water levels make the Demeni impassable for larger vessels, Monstros do Rio runs full operations while river competitors are forced out.
Giant peacock bass (Cichla temensis) headlines the target list, but the Demeni's biodiversity runs deeper: redtail catfish, goliath catfish, spotted sorubim, tiger sorubim, payara (locally called pirondiró), silver arowana, tambaqui, wolf fish, and freshwater corvina make for a species roster that few Rio Negro tributaries can match. Most fishing is concentrated in floodplain lakes that disconnect from the main channel at low water, trapping predators at high density. At shallow or hard-to-reach lakes, the operation keeps wooden canoes positioned at the water's edge to avoid dragging aluminum boats.
Boats are standardized 5.5 m flat-bottomed aluminum rigs with 30HP outboards, cushioned fishing chairs, a stocked cooler with water, soft drinks, and beer, hammocks for midday breaks, and a packed riverbank lunch kit. Native guides switch to oars for silent approaches at fishing spots — a discipline that measurably improves strike rates on low, clear-water lakes. Unlimited fuel and the Barcelos–Lodge–Barcelos riverboat transfer are both included in the package.
The land-based lodge sleeps up to 16 anglers across 5 rooms (three quads, two doubles), all with air conditioning, private bathroom with electric hot-water shower, and free Wi-Fi. The social heart of the grounds is a large open-sided palapa on stilts — hanging hammocks, wooden tables, and a bar built around a solid-wood trunk counter. All meals are covered: breakfast, lunch, afternoon snack, appetizers, and dinner, along with beer, hot beverages, and non-alcoholic drinks. Packages run Saturday to Friday (roughly 6 fishing days), with the season spanning September through March.
